What is meant by ‘cultural competence’?

Cultural competence refers to the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. This concept encompasses understanding and respecting cultural differences, which facilitates effective communication and fosters positive relationships in a multicultural environment. Being culturally competent involves not only awareness of one’s own cultural worldview but also an appreciation and sensitivity towards the values, beliefs, and practices of others.

While speaking multiple languages can enhance communication, it is not the sole indicator of cultural competence. Understanding cultural history and practices provides valuable context but doesn’t necessarily equate to effective interaction. Teaching cultural topics to others is a valuable skill, but it does not encapsulate the ability to engage with diverse individuals on a personal level. True cultural competence involves a combination of knowledge, awareness, and interpersonal skills that enable meaningful engagement with people from various cultures.
